About Regan's Autographs

About Me
Hello! My name is Ray Regan.  I have been collecting and studying autographs since the mid 1970's.

I started collecting autographs like most of you. I was bitten by the bug as a kid.

As a child I was an intense baseball fan. In my teenage years, I had multiple opportunities to attend games at Yankee Stadium. Before the games, we would hang out outside the player’s entrance. Back then you could easily score some very nice autographs.

One time, I ran into Henry Kissinger leaving the stadium via the owner’s entrance. (Turns out that "in Person" old Henry was not a very nice person). You can't do this anymore. The world has changed, Stadium security put an end to that type of access sometime in the 1990's.

In high school, I took an elective "Film Appreciation" class and was introduced to the films of Alfred Hitchcock. I was hooked after seeing “Lifeboat”.

I soon after discovered you could write to some of the old movie stars and if you were pleasant and wrote a nice letter, you might get yourself an autograph. That's what led me down this path.

Through all the trials an tribulations of life, I've never totally given up the hobby.  I may have taken some time away, because that is how life works. But it was always there in the background. Now in my retirement years, I find I enjoy the hunt of the hobby as much as I did when I was younger.

My Bona Fides
I've been a UACC Registered Dealer (RD# 092) since the inception of the dealer program.

I am also a member of PADAH (Preferred Autograph Dealers)

I've been selling autographs on eBay since 1997, with a 100% seller feedback (there's a link on this page)

I have an entry as a consignor and contributing expert in "R&R's 1998 Autograph price guide".

My Thoughts on Authenticity (long winded)
With the advent of companies like PSA/DNA, JSA, Beckett etc., there has been a rush in this hobby to have every autograph sold with an accompanying third-party authentication Certificate. I totally understand the usefulness of this.  In theory it's a good idea. I do have a few reasons for not actively using these services. I will explain why.

The obvious first and most prominent reason is the cost. I find it hard to justify the prices that are charged to have an item authenticated. These charges of course need to be passed on to the consumer.

I do guarantee, if someone purchases an item from me and they want, at their own cost, to submit it to one of these firms for authentication (3rd Party Opinion would be a better description than authentication) .

I will abide by the authenticator’s opinion. If something I sell ever fails this certification process, I will gladly and with zero drama, refund your money. No problem. No hassle. I offer a written authenticity guarantee, without time limit, to the original purchaser on every item I sell.

None of what I am saying pertains to the latest  trend of $10 quick authentic opinions. I mean really. $10 quick opinions sound like “5 cent psychiatric help”, That Lucy Van Pelt would hawk in the Peanuts comic strip.

From my experience, A quick glance doesn't work. It's a wasted $10. I have a very large library of exemplars that I have put together over my many years in the hobby. With autographs that I have familiarity with, I use at the minimum three known authentic examples before I render an opinion.

The second reason I do not actively use third party authentication and this is the most important to me, these firms were started by and still mostly deal with people in the sports autograph industry.

Hollywood autographs are secondary to what their meat and potatoes are. Just like you wouldn’t ask me for an opinion on your Minnie Minoso signed photo, why would you ask a sports autograph business for their opinion on Humphrey Bogart or Marlon Brando?

Authentication is based on knowledge. If you have not seen something before, it is difficult to make a proper judgment on it.  I have been collecting and studying vintage Hollywood autographs for over 45 years. I am not saying I am infallible. No one is.

When it comes to current celebrities, I trust and use a small circle of “In–Person” collectors. I have long time relationships with many of these people.

My Collection
My personal collecting interests are varied, Hollywood greats of the 1930's & 1940"s, Film Noir, Silent Film Comedians and lastly, The New York Rangers. I know, it's an inherited disease :)

Inventory
What you'll find on these pages is material that doesn't fill a need in my collection. My available inventory is constantly evolving. You never know what may turn up.
I also sell via eBay and via consignment on other dealers’ websites. Of course, your best deal will be had right here. Here, I don't need to pay someone else a commission, I cover taxes, and after your first website purchase, you become a “regular”. On all future purchases, you get to take an additional 10% off. Just use the discount code word "Falcon" At checkout. (It's all about Bogie)

Make an Offer / Payment Plans
If you find something here "That is a must have", But would like to discuss price, remember.... I'm a collector first. Contact me, I am more than willing to entertain offers on certain items. I'm also open to working out payment plans.

Buy / Trade
I am looking to buy or trade for select material. Same with quality collections. Contact me with a detailed description of what you have. Scans are encouraged.

Contact
Email is the best way to reach me. Phone is fine, but It's hit and miss. I'm always looking to learn something new and hope that I can pass on some of my own knowledge.

All the best, Ray Regan
