Mansfield, Jayne - 1956 TLS to a Film Critic w/ Circa 1956 Photo
One page TLS on a 7 x 10 ½ sheet which has a fantastic, illustrated caricature letterhead.
Dated August 17, 1956, addressed to Harry Harris, who was then the TV columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer. Harris was known for his sharp and sometimes acerbic commentary on the media and entertainment world. He had recently reviewed Jayne’s film, “The Girl Can’t Help It”. Harris famously wrote about Jayne’s talents, “You call that charm? You can see the same thing on a dairy farm".
Jayne’s sarcastic response to Harry, contained in this letter, states, “I just can’t tell you what the beautiful article you wrote meant to me. I feel you have boosted my career so much. It is people like you who make a star out of a starlet. With all my heart, may I say thank you.”
Beautifully signed by Jayne Mansfield, in blue ink. One center horizontal mailing fold, with a little age toning to the fold. Bottom edge frayed. Historic signed letter from the beginnings of her film career, showing her own sharp wit.
Comes with the original transmittal envelope, mailed from Jayne’s west 55th Street Manhattan apartment. Also included is an original circa 1957 8x10 photo of Jayne at the makeup mirror.
