Goddard, Paulette - 1939 TLS to Selznick exercising an option on her contract w/ Photo
April 10, 1939, 8 1/2 x 11 Selznick International Pictures one-page typed agreement letter referencing an option on a previous agreement. Signed by Paulette Goddard in black fountain pen.
The letter is printed on thin bond, with file punch holes to both the top and left side. Minor rust staining between the two top file punch holes. Otherwise, very fine and desirable signed letter from an important time in Goddard’s career.
This letter dates to around the time that Paulette, had recently lost the role to play Scarlet O’Hara in “Gone with The Wind” to Vivien Leigh. As a consolation, Selznick gave Paulette a meaty part in the film, “The Women”.
After “The Women”, which was a box office success, Goddard left Selznick and signed on with Paramount Pictures.
Paulette’s option, mentioned in this letter, may be her leaving Selznick for Paramount after the sting of losing the role of a lifetime.
Comes with a vintage 7 ½ x 9 ½ cardstock photo. One handling wrinkle near her left arm.
